How Deep Is Your Love?

Saturday Night Fever image

How Deep Is Your Love was written by the Brothers Gibb (The Bee Gees) and first released as a single in September 1977. It reached number three 3 in the UK charts but went to the top of the American Billboard Hot 100. In a British TV special shown in December 2011, it was voted The Nation's Favourite Bee Gees Song by ITV viewers. It became an evocative part of the soundtrack of the classic John Travolta movie Saturday Night Fever.

I know your eyes in the morning sun
I feel you touch me in the pouring rain
And the moment that you wander far from me
I wanna feel you in my arms again
And you come to me on a summer breeze
Keep me warm in your love, then you softly leave
And it's me you need to show

How deep is your love?

As a reminder, here are the Bee Gees singing the song with extracts from the movie:

Our first take is a video by renowned guitarists Australian Tommy Emmanuel and American John Knowles that makes us appreciate just how beautiful this composition is. Tommy says: "John and I chose this song because it's so beautifully written and needs nothing but the melody and chords to blend together. It's one of the finest Bee Gees songs written." Tommy is playing a custom Larrivee guitar.

You know the door to my very soul
You're the light in my deepest, darkest hour
You're my saviour when I fall
And you may not think I care for you
When you know down inside that I really do
And it's me you need to show

How deep is your love?

For our second take, here is a video of UK multi-intrumentalist Jacob Collier and a concert in Fort Laudredale in April 2022. Here he is at the piano but the audience provides a significant part of the number. They gradually join in with the lyrics but listen to how Jacob's voice comes in at around 5.9 minutes and then later, how he leaves the piano and works with the audience producing harmonies that make this recording very different:

How deep is your love?
I really mean to learn
'Cause we're living in a world of fools
Breaking us down when they all should let us be
We belong to you and me

I believe in you
How deep is your love?
How deep is your love?
How deep is your love?
