Jazz As Art

Nicolas Meier

from the album 'Orient'

When you listen to music, you sometimes conjure images in your mind. Our Jazz As Art series invites you to listen to a piece of jazz and as it plays, scroll down the page and see which of the pieces of art I have chosen comes closest to the pictures in your mind. Hopefully, this will introduce you to recordings and art works you might not have spent time with before.

UK-based guitarist Nicolas Meier originally hails from Switzerland; born in 1973 to parents who are great lovers of the arts, with wide-ranging musical tastes extending to the Classical, Jazz, Latin, Flamenco, Rock and Pop genres. He draws from a love of Turkish, Eastern & Middle Eastern music, Flamenco, Tango and more -- all mixed with jazz. Nicolas has been received numerous awards; has pursued advanced studies at Switzerland's prestigious Conservatoire de Fribourg, and subsequently earned a scholarship to Boston's illustrious Berklee College of Music. This track comes from his 2005 album, Orient. As well as guitar, Nicolas plays Turkish saz with Gilad Atzman (soprano sax), Asaf Sirkis (drums and bandir) and Tom Mason (acoustic bass). Nicolas' latest album Infinity was released in 2016.
